MONTGOMERY COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The Tactical Team was formed in 1982 under Sheriff Mac Butler. The Tactical Team started with a staff of eight deputies and over the years has grown to a fifteen member team.
Division and Command
The Tactical Team operates within the Investigation Division under the direct command of the Special Operations Bureau.
Deputies who wish to be a part of the Tactical Team must have been assigned to the Patrol Division for three years with no disciplinary actions. Try outs for the Tactical Team are held once a year. Deputies who pass the try outs will be placed in the training program for the Team which last one year. At the end of that year the Team will vote on the Deputy to be accepted or declined as a Team member.
The Tactical Team trains three times a month qualifying with all weapons that are utilized by the team. Different types of training blocks are conducted each month. Training includes explosive entry, hostage rescue, anti-terrorism, school shooting incidents, woodland search operations, and close quarter battle skills. These are examples of training blocks conducted. The Team will complete a physical fitness test twice a year and this does not include the many schools Team members attend yearly.
The tactical teams main sidearm is the Springfield Operator.45cal. Additional weapons include the H&K UMP .45cal submachine gun, the M-16 assault rifle, Remington 870 12ga shotgun w/ folding stock, Berreta semi-auto 12ga shotgun, Remington 700 308 police sniper rifle, Barrett .50cal single shot sniper rifle and a .338 sniper weapon. The Team also utizes M14s in special incidents. Non-lethal weapons include the Taser X26, the FN 303, and a variety of less than leathal shotgun rounds.
The Tactical Team is equipped with three armored vehicles. The first is a four wheeled military surplus Peacekeeper.The the second is military surplus M113 tracked armored personnel carrier. Additionally the Team employs a 15 passenger van that has been modified for tactical operations. Each member is assigned a Sheriff's Office vehicle to respond to calls and carry tactical equipment.In 2009 another armored vehicle was added to the Tactical fleet. It is made by Lenco.
The average amount of years of experience on the Tactical Team, at this time, is approximately eight years. The team has been highly successful on operational call outs over its 23 years in service with no serious injuries to any of its members.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Tactical Team is a highly motivated, well disciplined organization. It is one of the best equipped teams in the State. The team trains with other teams, locally, on a regular basis and teams throughout the state. They are available to assist other teams in the area when needed as well as conducting training for newly formed teams.
